Values are the core of every society; they determine its function, effectiveness and development, as well as the life-satisfaction and success of its citizens. But the meaning of the concept is far from clear. The aim of this book is to discuss and specify the idea of social values from the perspective of two disciplines of the social sciences: sociology and economics. In some areas congruent, in others disparate, both approaches are helpful in understanding the current events and processes in social and economic domains.

O autorach

Piotr Sztompka – Professor of Theoretical Sociology (emeritus) at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. He is a former President of the International Sociological Association (ISA), a member of the Polish Academy of Science, Academia Europaea and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, as well as a Doctor Honoris Causa of four Universities in Sweden, Russia and Poland. Among his books published in English the most important are: Society in Action (1991), The Sociology of Social Change (1993) translated into 8 languages, and Trust: A Sociological Theory (1999).

Jerzy Hausner – Full Professor of Economic Sciences, works at the Department of Public Administration at Krakow University of Economics, he is Rector’s Plenipotentiary for Culture and Sport. He is a former member of the Monetary Policy Council (2010–2016) and of the Economics Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He has been a member of the Polish National Commission for UNESCO since 2015 and he is also chairman of the Open Eyes Economy Summit Program Council and he has been a member of the High Level Industrial Roundtable “Industry 2030” since 2018. Finally, he is the Winner of the Kisiel Award.
